The conference found a new venue this year at the Sorensen Molecular Biotechnology Building (SMBB), which is also the new home of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Graduate students organized the conference and students presented their research in poster and podium format. Faculty and student panels judged and recognized the top presenters. A delicious catered barbecue lunch was served as part of the event, on what turned out to be a beautiful fall day.

To complement the student presentations, Dr. Vivian Lee, Dean, School of Medicine, Senior Vice President, University Health Sciences and CEO, University of Utah Health Care, spoke on the topic of “Technology and Innovation: Engines for Biomedical Engineering” where she highlighted many of the exciting interactions occurring between the health sciences and bioengineering faculty – showcasing the impact our biomedical design and product development curriculum is having in transforming healthcare.

“Dr. Lee is an outstanding leader of our Health Sciences Campus who has a bold vision for transforming the way heath care is delivered and taught,” says Patrick A. Tresco, chair of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah. “I am delighted that she articulated the value of our collaborations and has opened the doors for a more complete, clinically immersive, experience for our students; such experiences are driving innovation, immediately-applicable problem solving and technology development throughout our student body.”

Two students were recognized for their exceptional presentations: Nicolas Nolta of the Tresco Laboratory and Nan-Wei Liu of the Monson Laboratory. Nicolas presented “A CAD-Based Modeling Approach that Predicts the Foreign Body Response to Chronic CNS Implants” in a podium presentation and Nan-Wei presented a poster on “Mechanics of Blast Loading on an Isolated Blood Vessel: A Finite Element Approach.” Both were voted best in their respective presentation formats and awarded a $100 Visa gift card.
