Dennis Parker

Current Research

My general area of interest is the physics and mathematics of medical imaging. Although I have made contributions in X-ray CT and other forms of imaging, my primary area of focus for almost my entire career has been magnetic resonance imaging, with applications to angiography and most recently, the use of MRI in guiding thermal therapy including the ablative treatment of cancer. In 1980 I did research and published the first paper showing that magnetic resonance might be used for temperature imaging. For the past 25 years I have helped lead the development of the University of Utah's program in MRI guided focused ultrasound therapy and have mentored Dr. Allison Payne who now directs the development and clinical trials of our MRgFUS system for treating breast cancer.
